[NEWS] 141111 TVXQ Sets New Record in Japan, Most Singles Sold for Any Foreign Artist

Tohoshinki breaks Agnes Chan record and becomes the overseas singer with the highest total single sales ever

Released on November 5, [Times Works Wonders], the new single from the South Korean artist Tohoshinki sold above 107,000 copies and debuted at the 2nd place in the single ranking of the 11/17 week. So far, the total sales for their 43 singles that made it to the ranking amount to 4,088,000 - hence exceeding the previous record of 4,010,000 by Agnes Chan (59), making them the foreign artist with the most single sales ever.

Tohoshinki produced a great number of hit songs such as [BREAK OUT] (2010, cumulative sales of 289,000) or [Why? Keep Your Head Down] (2011, cumulative sales of 286,000). In July 2012, the release of [ANDROID] lead them to beat that same record for the first time for overseas group, previously held by [The Carpenters] for 10 years and 10 months (3,002,000 singles sold). Since then, their sales have been increasing steadily.

Before this, Tohoshinki had established an all-time record for foreign artists in 3 categories (T/N: I’m guessing for the weekly rankings):
- Total number of singles in the top 10: 34 singles (2nd place: BoA with 26 singles)
- Total number of singles to rank first: 12 singles (2nd place: Oyan Fifi and Kim Hyun-Joong with 2 each)
- Total number of sales in the first week of release for a single: 256,000 copies (2nd place: Elton John with 184,000).

With the “Total number of sales” one, this is Tohoshinki’s 4th gold medal.

Member Yunho (28) expressed his gratitude to fans: “I’m thrilled we have become the overseas artist with most total single sales. Thank you so much.” He also added: “The 5 Dome Tour, the live at Nissan Stadium and such… the dreams we painted around our debut time are coming true one after the other. And from now on, I want us to aim for a Tohoshinki that will continue improving more and more.”

Changmin (26) addressed fans as well: “I want to cherish singing each single song we will have in the future too. Next year, our second 5 Dome Tour will be held. We are getting ready so that we’ll manage to convey our gratitude to all fans nationwide, so please look forward to it.”

Total single sales for foreign artists, TOP5:
1. Tohoshinki: 4,088,000 copies

3. The Carpenters: 3,002,000 copies
