The October 22nd episode of On Style‘s ‘Fashion Magazine‘ sat down with TVXQ to talk about the boys’ favorite fashion styles and ideal types.

When asked to describe what their normal style is like, Changmin replied, “I try to wear clothing that makes me look thin and long. My essential fashion items are backpacks and fedoras.” As for pants, Changmin revealed that he preferred skinny jeans or pants slightly rolled up above the feet.

In contrast, Yunho chose, “I like taking standard styles and adding a point with accessories like big watches. I’m currently collecting big framed watches.”

When asked what their ideal style on women was, Changmin revealed, “I love Anne Hathaway‘s style in the movie, ‘The Devil Wears Prada‘. I thought everything she wore in the movie was pretty.”

The reporter asked, “Don’t you think it’s because her face was pretty?”, leading Changmin to honestly answer, “Well, I guess you can’t leave that out either.”

Asked to choose a Korean ideal type amongst the actresses, Changmin stated, “I’ll go with Kang Sora-ssi, who recently made her movie debut through ‘Sunny‘.”

“Topping charts makes you the best?”

Oricon. It’s a familiar word. With idol groups pouring into Japan, articles related to the Oricon Charts have been flooding Korea. Recently, we’ve seen more than a handful of articles without the title ‘So-and-So Tops Oricon’s OO Charts’. It’s all thanks to the exclusive contracts signed with Japanese agencies and their strategic debuts.

On the 29th of September, three Korean idol groups topped the various categories of the Oricon charts. T-ara, TVXQ and 2NE1 beat Japanese singers to come out on top in the daily single charts, the daily album charts and the weekly album charts respectively.

But we mustn’t just accept a ‘No. 1′ on the Oricon Charts for its outward appearance. This is because though it may be the same ‘No. 1′, the internal stability is totally different. One representative of the K-Pop industry stated, “Every idol group that has entered the Japanese market is using an Oricon marketing strategy,” and “The Oricon charts represent album sales. What matters is the actual number of copies sold, not the rankings.“

In fact, the ‘No.1′ spots by the three groups appeared to look the same, but were completely different when looked into. The actual amount of albums sold, as well as the difference in albums sold with the second highest album on the charts, made a clear distinction between these achievements. We’ve delved into the truth that lies between the number ’1′ on the Oricon Charts and we were able to compare the actual popularity of these idol groups in Japan.

◆”The ‘No.1′s are all the same? The nutritional value is different”

Last month, TVXQ, T-ara and 2NE1 dominated the Oricon charts as they topped the daily album charts, the daily single charts and the weekly album charts respectively. But the evaluation they received was completely different. While one topped the charts with soaring album sales that were above everyone else, another topped the charts thanks to a successful fence-sitting strategy.

The team with the highest nutritional value in their achievement was TVXQ. They sold 105,486 copies of their new album ‘TONE’ on the first day. This is the first time since their debut in Japan that they have sold over 100,000 copies of an album on its release date. And the difference in album sales between TVXQ and second place was immense. They sold almost nine times more than ‘Sakanaction’, who sold 17,957 copies of their album. TVXQ’s first day album sales can easily put on the same level as that of Japan’s top singers such as Ayumi Hamasaki and V6.

T-ara’s achievements were quite surprising. They ranked high on the daily and weekly charts of their debut single ‘Bo Beep Bo Beep’. Selling 20,068 copies on their debut date, these figures are similar to the average number of singles Japanese singers sell when they top the Oricon single charts. What’s equally surprising is the fact that T-ara beat SID, who have been named the hottest artistes of the year in Japan. On the day of T-ara’s debut, SID sold 16,851 copies of their single and came in at second place.

2NE1′s ‘No.1′ came out of sheer luck. ‘Nolza’ topped the weekly charts (19th~25th) with 26,334 copies sold, barely beating the modern rock group ‘Every Little Thing’ with a 5,149 copies difference. But 2NE1′s weekly album sales are similar to what T-ara sold in a single day (21st). It would be meaningless to even attempt to compare them with TVXQ. 2NE1 was able to top the charts thanks to the fact that luckily, there wasn’t much competition against them.

◆”Comparing their future value with all Hallyu-dols”

All the records set by Hallyu-dols till now can become a standard to compare the true value of these top spots on the charts. No other idol can be compared to TVXQ and their activities. T-ara’s debut achievements are similar to that of Girls’ Generation and KARA. Though 2NE1 ranked high on the album charts with their debut album, there’s no substance in their win.

First of all, TVXQ are the undisputed top dogs and boast an absolute advantage in album sales. They are constantly breaking their own records. For example, this is the first time they’ve sold over 100,000 copies on their first day. This shows that JYJ leaving the group didn’t hinder TVXQ’s Japanese activities and regardless of the long hiatus they took, they are still powerful in the industry.

T-ara, who sold 20,000 copies of their single on the first day, came out on top ahead of their competition of Rainbow (10,141 copies) and After School (9,060 copies) who debuted around the same time. T-ara’s achievements can be compared to that of Girls’ Generation or KARA’s weekly results. The two groups sold around 40,000 copies of their debut singles and T-ara sold a total of 49,712 copies of their single in their first week.

Though 2NE1 topped the charts with their debut album that sold 26,334 copies, they’ve mostly been met by criticism of ‘sneak thieving’. There’s no substance in their win as their weekly album sales are only one fifth to one tenth of the album sales of KARA and Girls’ Generation’s weekly album sales. KARA sold 107,403 copies of ‘Girls’ Talk’ while Girls’ Generation sold 232,000 copies of ‘Girls’ Generation’.

◆”Oricon Marketing, What matters more than the rankings is internal stability”

Oricon boasts the most powerful influence in the J-Pop market. That may be why K-Pop agencies are focusing their efforts on Oricon marketing. It is being used as a mere tool to show off idol groups’ achievement. But we must not be fooled by the mere outward appearance of a ‘No.1′ spot as the ranking may be the same, but the actual worth of the win is completely different.

An expert in the J-Pop industry stated, “You have to look into when and from whom the ‘No.1′ spot was taken. There’s a big difference in releasing an album at the same time as ‘SMAP’ and at the same time as a rookie group,” and criticized the bubble surrounding the No.1 title as he pointed out, “It would be a mistake for one to use only a ‘No.1′ spot on the Oricon Charts to gauge a group’s popularity in Japan.“

Of course, there’s no reason to devalue the worth of the charts’ rankings. No matter whether the competition was fierce or not, a ‘No.1′ spot on the Oricon charts is a meaningful achievement. The problem is the exaggerated reports made on such achievements. We must not distort the essence of the charts in order to make an image of a Hallyu star. What’s more important than rankings is internal stability, and this can only be achieved through high album sales.

A representative of the K-Pop industry stated, “The gauge for a group’s popularity lies in their album sales. The numbers that change every day and every week are nothing but a mirage. A bubble that can burst at any minute,” and “Instead of obsessing over numbers, idol groups should focus on honing their skills. What’s most important is to gain a competitive edge if one wants to survive in the Japanese market for a long period of time.“

Similarity 1. They are all experiencing unfair events that are quite strange and hard to understand.

JYJ’s album topped Gaon’s album sales charts for September and it is said that till now, they’ve sold over 350,000 copies. This is most probably the highest album sales record of all the album that have been released in Korea this year. They even topped the online music charts as soon as the tracks from the album were released online. The dramas they appeared in, which are SungKyunKwan Scandal, Miss Ripley and Protect the Boss, have all been extremely popular and the members themselves have been praised for their acting skills.

But JYJ are currently unable to appear on music programs as singers. Though they top album charts, though they are popular and though they are the forerunners of the Hallyu Wave, they are unable to appear on music programs. They are unable to, even though they want to. It’s quite a strange and unfair thing for them. What’s even stranger is that though they sell so many albums and though they top online music charts, their names can never be found on any of the ranking charts of the three major broadcasting companies’ music programs.

There’s a rumor flying around that Infinite Challenge may once more have disciplinary action taken against it by the Korea Communications Standards Commission. The reason is because of the recent car explosions and PD Journal reported that it was because the scene was aired without an advance warning. No one knows what will happen but as Infinite Challenge isn’t the first production to have car explosions included in its broadcasted footage, it’s quite strange to suddenly have them pushed into the spotlight for it.

Kim Eo Joon’s Unconventional Advice has had quite high ratings amongst the MBC radio programs and has been ranked high as a Podcast. But suddenly, the news has been delivered that the show has been scrapped. The program’s only been around for six months and has been steadily gaining much popularity over this period of time, so it’s hard to believe that this show is suddenly getting the axe. Now that we look back, we can see that Yoon Do Hyun’s Two O’clock Date, which featured Kim Eo Joon, has also disappeared. It couldn’t be that the show is being scrapped just because of Kim Eo Joon but it’s quite a strange incident indeed.

Similarity 2. They are all fighting with something big.

JYJ fought and are still fighting SM, a major entertainment agency. They filed a lawsuit against their unjust contract and the Courts accepted their injunction request. Their opponent SM is undisputedly the largest entertainment agency in Korea. But that is not to say that SM is linked to what has happened to JYJ till now. We are merely trying to get across the fact that JYJ are currently up against the nation’s top entertainment agency.

Infinite Challenge is fighting against social irregularities. They fought for the Dokdo issue, and they take on the role of letting the world know of those who are suffering in areas that aren’t that well-known. But they don’t show these outright and instead opt to show allusions here or here amidst the fun and laughter they provide. It’s a very classy way of social criticism and a very sophisticated method of social participation. But as always, Evil is strong and powerful. It can’t be denied that the bad points, problems and irregularities of society are too strong of an opponent.

Kim Eo Joon is fighting with vested interests. He often uses swearwords to give a piercing admonition against it. Kim Eo Joon is the person who is willing to boldly take on issues that others were too afraid to even mention. With no vested interest in anything, he has placed himself within his own kingdom that he himself built and has been fighting off the pressure from vested interests that continue to attack him. He had to give up his own vested rights to fight against a strong opponent.

Similarity 3. They are all staying afloat thanks to their strong fandoms.

One of the major reasons why JYJ have been doing well despite the fact that they haven’t been able to appear on music programs is because of their fans. These fans support their stars, though they are unable to see JYJ on TV, and are waiting by JYJ’s side for the day that these strange events disappear for good.

The fanatics of Infinite Challenge have been strongly demanding that Infinite Challenge be left alone. Many fans, with the thought that Infinite Challenge should be protected, have come together with the show as their center. It seems that they are willing to even collect money from their own pockets if it means that the show can keep going. They have interpreted the messages given to them by Infinite Challenge and are working alongside the show in harmony.

Kim Eo Joon’s fans are giving him their full support. They know that he will continue living life in his own way and he in return is giving them the encouragement, ‘Don’t back down!’. This could also be something that he’s saying to himself. Though he knows that there are many fans who have his back, he cares deeply for his fans as though he is all alone. And though his fans complain and act indifferent, they are willing to step up and defend him if needed.

There are countless people in the world who share similarities. It’s not an amazing thing. It may be that the three similarities these three groups share aren’t that amazing after all. But considering the fact that we feel pity at the first similarity that they are faced with unjust events, pride at the second similarity that they are fighting a strenuous battle against very powerful vested rights, and electrifying fear at the third similarity that without the strong foundation of a fandom to support them, they could have disappeared without a trace, one could also feel that these similarities are truly something special. It could just be a feeling.

There has always been the saying that if coincidences keep occurring, then it’s not an accident, it’s fate. But what stands out more than this statement is the saying that, ‘If coincidences keep occurring, then it was planned from the start’ because this feels closer to the reality that we live in. Whatever the case, we pray that these three teams no longer have to suffer from strange events that are unacceptable.
